Winter Fun in Kitzbuhel Š
Austria

By Mary Elisabeth Pitz

Kitzbuhel, the jewel of the Austrian Alps, welcomes visitors with its open valleys surrounded by snow-covered mountains and storybook town buildings. Unlike most Alpine villages, Kitzbuhel is open, not crowded by hovering mountains. Very popular in summer; in winter, miles of ski trails with varying degrees of difficulty keep everyone in the family busy. Cross country skiers have as many options as the downhill crowd. Yet, Kitzbuhel is a lot more than skiing.
Best for FITs, couples, small families or groups of friends. This is an upscale, affluent, yet informal mountain resort. Like Aspen and Vail, it's as busy in winter as it is in summer.
Beyond Skiing From town, trails wind around the river leading walkers to the mountains. The mountains have miles of well-marked, snowy, walking trails with strategically placed wooden benches for optimum vista viewing.
Rushing brooks and thick, snow-covered forests more than compensate for the steep paths. Ultimately the trails lead to ski lifts, where you can stop for a hot meal, drinks, or to watch the skiers.
Spa Lovers Take Note
Austrians love their spas.
Kitzbuhel's luxury hotels offer full spa services. Best and most accessible among these is the Body & Soul Wellness-Center located in the Sporthotel (center of town), which focuses on aromatheraphy.
Less expensive and catering to the public is Aquarena, the town's health center with sauna, steam, a series of massages, swimming pool, etc. Pre-reservations are a must if your clients want appointments when they arrive.
