Central Florida Sports

Central Florida
A Sports Paradise

By Doug Cooke

When you think of a Central Florida vacation, your first thoughts are likely of theme parks, and that is to be expected. After all, it was Walt Disney World that put Orlando on the map 25 years ago.

Although theme parks are what come to mind first, they are not the only attractions that Central Florida has to offer. A growing number of travelers are finding that Central Florida provides a wide variety of attractions for sporting and outdoor enthusiasts.

Walt Disney World Speedway

Auto Action
The Richard Petty Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway is stuff NASCAR fans dreams are made of. Taking advantage of auto racing's #1 ranking of all spectator sports, the Richard Petty Experience gives everyone the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a high performance stock car.

If driving in a stock car is beyond your comfort level, then go to the Fun Spot Action Park on I-Drive. This $4,000,000 complex offers four go-kart tracks as well as other amusement rides. At about $4 a ride these go-karts will give you a great thrill/dollar spent ratio.

Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex
Another Disney venue built with the sports enthusiast in mind is Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. This multisport complex includes a baseball stadium (spring training home of the Atlanta Braves), a football stadium and a field house with six full size basketball courts and seating for 5,500 spectators.

For those interested in getting in on the sporting action the year-round NFL Experience gives visitors a chance to pass, catch and kick like the pros.

RDV Sportsplex Ice Rink

The RDV Sportsplex
The RDV Sportsplex, located on 21 acres just north of downtown Orlando, is a 365,000-square-foot facility designed to be a destination for sports and wellness.

With activities and services available to both members and non-members the facility includes: an athletic club, tennis center, ice rinks, pro-shops, salon and day spa, daycare, a medical complex and meeting space for special events, parties and more.

It is the only sports facility to serve as home to three professional sports teams - the NBA Magic, the IHL Solar Bears and the WNBA Orlando Miracle.
