New Zealand's Rural Delights
New Zealand's Rural
Delights
By Margaret Zellers
Rural areas of New
Zealand’s North and South Islands are laced with a network of trails, with some
that can appeal to walkers and other challenging for experienced hikers and
climbers. But, for many visitors, the ease of getting from city to countryside
is a surprise.

Winery Visits From December through April, visitors can follow the Marlborough Wine
Trail, visiting wineries in Renwick, Blenheim, and nearby areas at times when
tasting and other special events are scheduled.
Another area noted for
wineries that are open to the public for tours, tastings and meals is Hawke’s
Bay, around Napier and Hastings, on North Island. Air New Zealand sponsors an
annual wine festival, in mid-October, at Gisborne, north of Hawke’s Bay on North
Island.

A Unique Place to Stay
To spoil yourself, stay at the 10-room
Orongo Bay Homestead. The
charming small hotel is well known domestically for its gourmet cuisine using
fresh local produce.
The full day’s drive between Auckland and the inn is an
opportunity for sightseeing. On one of the two days in the Bay of Islands, you
can visit the "hole in the rock" formation or enjoy swimming with
dolphins.
Private cruises to some of the dozens of small islands and other
activities can be costly, but worth the investment.
